At the age of 9 while in a soap commercial at Madison Pollack and Ohara, Gerald Hirschfeld ASC sat David on his lap and let him look through the viewfinder of a Mitchell BNCR–from that moment on David knew he was going to become a cinematographer. Before he was 10, David had built his own dark room in a closet in order to be able to print his own photos. By 13, he shot his first film based on Gulliver's Travels that he edited and created S/Fx in-camera. And throughout his pre-teen and teen years, he continued to make films with subjects ranging from a sympathetic story about a large girl being picked on by her fellow students, to full-out miniature tank battles with explosions. David was the AV projectionist at all of the schools he attended. He just couldn't keep away from film.

At 16, David entered the film industry part-time in New York as a bicycle messenger serving tv commercial production companies. When 18, David volunteered as in intern at Andy Warhol's "The Factory" on Union Square, and at Phos Cine where he worked on productions such as Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones. He was he was a gopher at David Bowie's Main Man Productions and then shot his first 1/2 inch B+W Sony Porta Pack Video entitled "Abbie Hoffman Makes Gefilte Fish" (180MB) 1973 with Laura Cavestani at the Chelsea Hotel, where he was living at the time.

Later, David migrated to the editing room as an apprentice editing room assistant. He then worked as the late Donald Cammell's personal assistant [Director: Performance (1968) Demon Seed (1977) White Of The Eye (1987) The Argument (1998) Wild Side (1999)] on the development of, "Ishtar" and "Potatoes and Jam". It was Donnald who offered David the opportunity to act as assistant editor on his short film, "The Argument". Moving behind the camera, he worked at CBS for the special documentary unit and EYE On and PBS Networks as a documentary cameraperson. He has worked on docs on the Dalai Lama's first vist to the USA to the first Space Shuttle launch. Followed as an award-winning director at Columbia Pictures Television's EUE/Screen Gems Commercial Division, where he was also a music video pioneer. He is credited with authoring and lensing the second music video aired on the opening day of MTV following "Video Killed the Radio Star", the title of no. 2 is "You Better Run" by Pat Benatar (click for YouTube) . David is also credited with the world's first long form video, "Midnite Trampoline" (click for YouTube), one year before Michael Jackson's much acclaimed, "Killer". Eventually moving into feature films and programming for the investment community followed by a transition to digital media in 1993 whence he returned to school inorder to learn computer animation and digital compositing. He is thoroughly proficient in GIG 3D, PowerAnimator, Maya, Compositor, Eddy, After Effects, Discreet Logic Flint & Flame, Xaos n-Title, Xaos Pandemoniun, Final Cut Pro, Motion and Photoshop...and anything photochemical. In 1996, David became one of the first exploiters of combined hybrid film and digital turbulance force transition effects for Gloria Estafan's, "Abriendo Puertas" (click for You Tube) , winning him the coveted Billboard Best Latin Music Video Award. David has also won the Country Music Awards for Cleve Francis' "Love Light" and J and T Cash, Tom T Hall, George Jones, "Thoughts on the Flag". Over 60 Music Videos and 300 t.v. commercials later, David decided to return his roots as a cinematographer and join in the digital cinema camera revolution. David also has extensive experience in the business world as a founder of New Papyrus Group, Inc. (since 1993). The company has a prestigious client list and has been on the advent of New Media marketing. The group created the world's first 3-D Virtual Showroom for Mercedes G-Class, winning them the coveted Forbes "Best of the Web" for the year 2000. David now explores the world, absorbing the exquisiteness of the colors and contours with adoring purpose, which he tries to share with others through images and music. His creations blend film, digital imagery & sound. He lives in his casita North of Taos with his dog and 2 cats.
